This year we hosted 30 local beach cleans with over 1,200 volunteers. We also count numerous active campaigns involving local, regional, state and federal engagement including: SONGS with an emphasis on working with our local Congressional delegation and task force headed by Hon. Mike Levin with two Surfrider representatives on the task force prioritizing federal legislative efforts to remove and locate spent fuel canisters at a consent-based location.- Defending local foam ban in San Clemente and continuing our work on ordinances and reductions of single use plastics. Activating a regional Community Choice Energy campaign group to educate local cities and residents on the benefits of these programs. Continued monitoring, awareness, and engagement on beach erosion , climate change and sea level rise issues including long term planning for proper management of our shorelines and beaches. Continued monitoring of federal offshore oil drilling initiatives and its impact on South Orange County beaches and communities. Our chapter participated with the launch and growth of the Business Alliance to Protect the Pacific, a no new offshore oil drilling business alliance now with over 5,000 business members. We have participated in numerous Congressional environmental round tables and policy meetings with federal and state and locally elected officials, including participating in oceans and recreation days in Washington, DC and Sacramento. Our chapter has been a frequent participant at California Coastal Commission meetings preparing comment and direction to the Commission on local issues directly related to the Surfrider mission. We participated in several large events and festivals which provide the chapter opportunity to reach tens of thousands of people and Surfrider supporters including: KROQ Weenie Roast, Ohana Festival, Sabroso Festival, California Wine Festival, Coast Film Festival’s inaugural year, and Taste of Laguna Beach, just to name a few. We offer information and education on our local and global issues while tabling, but also have memberships, merchandise, information on our programs like Ocean Friendly Restaurants and opportunities for visitors to volunteer locally with our chapter. South OC Chapter has registered over 20 Ocean Friendly Restaurants in our footprint in Laguna Beach, Dana Point, Irvine and San Clemente! We’ve hosted 4 mixers in 2019 for our members and to support some of these restaurant partners. We had over 6 of our restaurants participate in our largest fundraiser, California Wine Festival, for a greatly successful cross promotional program both at the event and during the weekend. Lastly as we look towards 2020, our chapter executive committee, chairs and active volunteers look forward to seeing you on the beach or at one of our many 2020 events including those annuals mentioned above, World Water Day and International Surf Day events, International Coastal Clean Up and lots of fun surf movie nights, membership mixers, educational chapter meetings and volunteer trainings that we are planning in 2020! Consequently, some fossil fuel companies are being forced to shut down drilling rigs and file for bankruptcy protection. Big companies like Exxon Mobil, Shell and Saudi Aramco, which see signs of a coming decline in fossil fuel use, are compensating for the low prices by investing in plastic production, since plastics are made from oil, gas and their byproducts. As a result, the World Economic Forum expects plastic production to double by 2040." - Excerpt from Columbia University Earth Institute Support your oceans, waves, and beaches. Your support will help the Surfrider Foundation get one step closer to our vision of protecting 100% of our coasts. And it's a sound investment - for every $1.00 you give to the Surfrider Foundation 87 cents will go directly to support our coasts.
